Penang Bridge International Marathon History

The Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM) has been part of Malaysia's sporting calendar since 1982, when it first ran as a road race from Esplanade to Gurney Drive. The race made its way onto the iconic Penang Bridge in 1986, shortly after the bridge opened, and the full marathon category was added in 1998. Since then, it has grown into one of the largest mass-participation sporting events in the country, drawing runners from over 70 countries.

From 2024, the marathon entered a new phase. The race relocated to Batu Kawan and now runs across the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge, the second Penang bridge, with ASPEN Vision City as the start and finish point. The relocation has given the event more space to scale, and in 2025, PBIM drew over 22,000 runners from 65 countries and regions. For 2026, organisers are targeting 23,000 to 25,000 participants.

The event is organised by the Penang State Tourism Development office (PETACH) and fully supported by the Penang State Government, which has leaned into PBIM as part of the broader Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.

The Route

The race starts and finishes at ASPEN Vision City in Batu Kawan. Runners cross the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge, which at 24km is one of the longest bridges in Southeast Asia, with the turnaround point located at Batu Maung on Penang Island.

The course is largely flat, which works in your favour for pace, but the open bridge stretch means you will be running fully exposed to wind, particularly in the early morning hours. Plan for that. Hydration stations are placed along the route, and medical support is available throughout.

Based on past editions, flag-off times typically run as follows:

  • Full Marathon: around 1:30am
  • Half Marathon: around 3:30am
  • IHH 10KM Run: around 6:00am

These times are subject to confirmation by the organisers closer to race day.

Running Tips for Penang Bridge Marathon

  • Train for the bridge. The Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge is long and flat, so your training should include long stretches of flat road running. Do not assume that a hilly training programme will carry over here.
  • Prepare for the wind. Running across an open bridge in the early morning hours means unpredictable headwinds. A light long-sleeve layer for the full and half marathon categories is worth considering, particularly for the first hour before temperatures rise.
  • Sort out your gear collection early. Race packet collection runs from 10 to 12 December. Do not leave it to the last day on 12 December. Collection closes at 2:00pm and queues can be long.
  • Know your cutoff time. Finisher medals and tees are only awarded within the qualifying time for your category. If you are close to the cutoff, plan your pacing strategy in advance rather than banking on finishing comfortably.
  • Get to Batu Kawan early. Parking fills up fast on race morning. If you are not staying in the area, allow extra time for the drive or consider arranging transport the night before.

What to Do After the Race?

Eat well first. Yusuf Restaurant Vervea is about 2km from the ASPEN Vision City starting point and serves one of the best nasi kandar in Penang, which is exactly what you want after burning through several thousand calories on the bridge. Go early before it gets busy.

Explore Penang. With race day on a Saturday, most runners have the Sunday free. Georgetown is less than 30 minutes from Batu Kawan and is worth the trip. The heritage zone has a high concentration of street art, pre-war shophouses, and hawker stalls that are hard to find elsewhere. For something quieter, Penang Hill takes about an hour each way and gives you a full view of the island and the straits on The Habitat Penang Hill.

Get around on your own terms. Relying on ride-hailing around Penang over the race weekend, when demand spikes and prices follow, is not ideal. If you are planning to spend a few days exploring Penang after the marathon, renting a car with Penangbook gives you the flexibility to move at your own pace without waiting around for a ride.

Conclusion

PBIM 2026 is shaping up to be the biggest edition yet, with organisers targeting up to 25,000 runners as part of the Visit Malaysia 2026 year. The race has found its footing at Batu Kawan, the route across the second bridge is now well-established, and the category structure gives runners at every level a genuine reason to show up.
